General description

UDP-glucose ceramide glucosyltransferase (UGCG) is localized in the Golgi apparatus. It is a component of glycosphingolipids. The UGCG gene is mapped to human chromosome 9q31.3.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

UDP-glucose ceramide glucosyltransferase (UGCG) catalyzes the formation of glucosylceramide and is a key enzyme in glycosphingolipid (GSL) metabolism. It is crucial for glycosphingolipids maturation that is specific for sperm. UGCG overexpression is observed in breast cancer cells and multidrug resistance in tumor types. Deletion of UGCG gene in mouse germ cells may lead to the arrest of spermatogenesis.
