General description
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.
Phosphatidylcholine, a major source of diacylglycerol (DAG) is considered as a biological membrane lipid. 20:0 PC is a zwitterionic lipid.
Application
20:0 PC may be used:
- in the preparation of liposomes
- to prepare vesicles or supported bilayer to study its ability in spontaneously forming distinct lipid domains, rafts and/or asymmetric bilayers along with other phosphatidylcholine lipids
- to prepare small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) to study the effect of hydrophobic mismatch on gramicidin conformation and organization
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) can serve as a surfactant in the mucus.

We investigated if mixtures of the phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipids 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (C12:0 PC; DLPC) and 1,2-diarachidoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (C20:0 PC; DAPC), which differ by eight methylene groups in acyl chain length, lead to the spontaneous formation of distinct lipid rafts and asymmetric bilayers.
