General description

Phosphatidylethanolamine is an aminophospholipid. It is present in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Phosphatidylethanolamine is one of the most abundant glycerophospholipids in biological membranes. It is found in nervous tissue.

Application

16:0 PE has been used:
  • for the preparation of perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanoparticles
  • for lipid binding by liposome flotation assays
  • to characterize the metabolic fate of synaptamide in a dopaminergic cell line

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylethanolamine forms pure lipid structures. It plays a vital role in autophagy, cell division and protein folding. Phosphatidylethanolamine functions as a precursor for the synthesis of various protein modifications. It controls membrane fluidity in eukaryotic cells. Phosphatidylethanolamine behaves as an intermediate for the synthesis of glycerophospholipid classes.
