General description
Application
- Colistin has been used for multi drug resistant infections bacilli like: Enterobacterales, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii.[9-13]
- To permeabilize to bacteria cell membrane to learn mannose-resistant haemagglutination and antibiotic resistance in A. baumannii strain.[14]
- For nephrotoxicity study in rat kidney.[15] and for MICs, time-kill kinetics, and postantibiotic effect (PAE) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.[16]
- To induce cell toxicity in 24h on PC-12 cell line, causing decrease of cell viability ~by 75% with concentration of 125µg/ml colistin sulfate.[17]
- To show cell toxicity affect in dose (3-100µg/ml) dependent manner against HK-2 cells as part of a study to learn on the mechanism of colistin inducing nephrotoxicity.[18]
Biochem/physiol Actions
Antimicrobial Spectrum: Colistin has microbial activity against Enterobacteriaceae family members like E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Citrobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Shigella spp. Colistin is also active against nonfermentive gram-negative bacteria, like Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia [6-8] and also against other gram negative species.[9]
