General description
PKCη (protein kinase C η) belongs to the protein kiinase C family. It is mainly expressed in the squamous cell epithelia.
Biochem/physiol Actions
PKCη (protein kinase C η) mainly participates in terminal differentiation of keratinocytes. It is responsible for arresting the cell cycle at G1 phase. It is also involved in phosphorylation of p21 and suppression of cdk2 (cyclin-dependent kinase 2) kinase activity by associating with cyclin E/cdk2/p21 complex, thereby regulating cell cycle. PKCη is upregulated in breast cancer and is associated with cell growth.

Protein kinase C (PKC) serves as the receptor for tumor-promoting phorbol esters, which are potent activators of conventional (c) and novel (n) PKCs. We recently showed that these activators induced selective upregulation of PKCη in breast cancer cells. The objective

PKC is activated on the cell membrane by phospholipids, thereby transducing signals to intracellular pathways. We provide here another function of PKC, namely, regulating cell cycle by interaction with the cyclin E/cdk2/p21 complex. Among the 10 isoforms of PKC, PKCeta
