General description
Vero cells are anchorage-dependent cells and have wide applications in molecular and cell biology research. Vero cells have a pseudo-diploid karyotype and are preferred cell lines for the propagation of various viruses, including poliovirus, rotavirus influenza and rabies virus. These cells are useful hosts for vaccine production.
Application
VERO cell lines have been used:
- in the propagation of Chandipura virus (CHPV)
- in the cytotoxicity assay to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-viral activities of Capsicum annuum methanolic extracts
- for the propagation of T.cruzi
Virus studies: polio, rubella, arboviruses and reoviruses
Biochem/physiol Actions
Established from the kidney of a normal adult African Green monkey. Susceptible to a wide range of viruses including polio, rubella, arboviruses and reoviruses.
Monkey African Green kidney
Preparation Note
Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:3 to 1:6 i.e. seeding at 1-3x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37 °C.
