General description

Potassium hydroxide is an inorganic compound commonly known as caustic potash. It is a strong alkali, readily reacts with acids. It can be used in various reactions such as nucleophilic substitution, hydrolysis, and addition reactions. Sometimes it can also be used as a catalyst for aldol-type reactions.

Application

Potassium hydroxide can be used to adjust the pH of the solution.
It can also be used:
  • As a catalyst in the alkynylation of heteroaromatic N-oxides to synthesize corresponding C2-alkynylheterocycles.
  • As a superbase medium with dimethyl sulfoxide (KOH/DMSO medium) for the synthesis of cross-coupling products under transition metal-free conditions from reactions between aryl halides and various sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen-based nucleophiles.
  • In the synthesis and thermodynamic study of Na-based zeolites.
