General description
Vulcan XC72 is a mesoporous carbon black characterized by its moderately high surface area, approximately 250 m²/g, coupled with superior electrical conductivity. The carbon particles exhibit an approximately spherical morphology and possess a primary size distribution ranging from 30 to 60 nanometers. This unique combination of features makes Vulcan XC72 an ideal candidate for various applications requiring antistatic and conductive properties.
Vulcan XC72 Conductive Carbon Black is a high-quality conductive additive that enhances the electrical conductivity and performance of battery electrodes. Its use contributes to greener technologies by improving energy efficiency, extending battery life, and supporting the development of more sustainable and durable energy storage systems. Application
VULCAN XC72 is widely used in research and development for numerous antistatic and conductive purposes, particularly as a catalyst support. Its high specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity contribute to enhanced performance in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), outperforming materials such as acetylene black. Vulcan XC72′s adaptability facilitates the creation of catalyst composites, where catalyst nanoparticles may be either uniformly dispersed and deposited onto the carbon black substrate or synthesized in situ. The material′s extensive surface area is instrumental in regulating the size of catalyst nanoparticles, with evidence suggesting that carbon blacks with larger surface areas tend to produce smaller nanoparticles. Beyond fuel cell applications, Vulcan XC72 has also been employed as a catalyst support in various battery technologies, including redox flow batteries and metal-air batteries, such as zinc-air and sodium-air, where its properties enhance the overall electrochemical performance.
