Insulin solution from bovine pancreas has been used:

to study the effect of exogenous insulin on plasma concentrations of glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), and progesterone (P4) in pubertal beef heifers

to study the effect of insulin receptor signaling dendritic spine density in neonatal mouse hippocampal neurons in vitro

Biochem/physiol Actions

Insulin is a major glucose-lowering hormone, insufficiency of which causes hyperglycemia observed in type 2 diabetes.

Two-chain polypeptide hormone produced by the β-cells of pancreatic islets. Its molecular weight is ~5800 Da. The α and β chains are joined by two interchain disulfide bonds. The α chain contains an intrachain disulfide bond. Insulin regulates the cellular uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids and inhibits the breakdown of glycogen, protein, and fat.
