Ethylene glycol can also be produced from fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas and coal) and biomass-derived resources. It is a polyol having a wide range of industrial applications.

Ethylene glycol may be used as a standard in the determination of ethylene glycol present in serum samples using gas chromatography (GC).
