General description
Aluminum oxide (Alumina, Al2O3) is commonly used as adsorbent. Formation of protective α-Al2O3 scales on the alloys at high temperatures has been studied. Polycrystalline Al2O3 has been employed to investigate the self-diffusion coefficient of aluminum in the temperature range of 1670°-1905°C. Aluminium oxide can either be obtained via thermal conversion of aluminium hydroxide at temperatures >1200οC or via combustion of aluminium. Aluminium oxide nanoparticles can behave like safe adjuvants and carriers for eliciting antibodies from small molecules called haptens.
Application
Aluminum oxide (Alumina) may be employed for the selective adsorption of the catecholamines during their determination in diverse biological matrices. It may be used in the fabrication of polycrystalline lithium iodide - aluminum oxide solid electrolytes. The incorporation of aluminum oxide remarkably increased the conductivity of lithium iodide. Aluminum oxide (activity II-III, according to the Brockmann scale) has been used for the chromatographic purifications.
