Le thimérosal est un réactif oxydant les groupements sulfhydryle (thiol) qui est capable d'inhiber de multiples protéines et enzymes dépendantes de groupements sulfhydryle telles que la méthionine synthase dépendante de la PI3-kinase, les récepteurs transporteurs du glutamate et les ATPases dépendantes de Na⁺+K⁺.

As part of the corporation global plan to support the Minamata Convention in eliminating mercury-containing compounds, as of January 2021 customers will be required to provide an End-Use Declaration. The sales of thimerosal will be restricted for approved applications only, such as preservative in vaccine manufacturing, preservative in eye cosmetics, research use within academia (excluding preservation intent) and as reference material only.

The product is not intended for use as a biocide under global biocide regulations, including but not limited to US EPA′s Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act , European Biocidal Products Regulation, Canada′s Pest Management Regulatory Agency, Turkey′s Biocidal Products Regulation, Korea′s Consumer Chemical Products and Biocide Safety Management Act (K-BPR) and others.
