General description

Cardiolipin is a unique phospholipid present in the inner mitochondrial membrane, which makes up to 20% of total lipids. It is a non-bilayer anionic phospholipid, which has four acyl chains and small headgroup.

Application

Heart CA has been used as a standard stock solution for its quantitative analysis using liquid chromatography−mass spectrometry (LC-MS)/MS. It has also been used for liposome preparation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cardiolipin is involved in the dynamic organization of membranes and in cell division. It is implicated in proton uptake pathway. Cardiolipin plays a vital role in mitochondrial biogenesis, fusion and fission, respiration and protein import. It regulates cell wall biogenesis, vacuole homeostasis, aging, cell cycle and apoptosis.
